2011 International Year for People of African Descent

The Harriet Tubman Institute for Research on the Global Migrations of African Peoples invites you to participate in Summer Institute/Institut d’Été 2011.  

Through its affiliation with the Teaching and Research Programme of Institut Interdisciplinaire Virtuel des Hautes Études sur les Esclavages et les Traites (IVHEET), the one week event (August 21 to 27, 2011) will bring together an international host of scholars, junior scholars, graduate students, teachers, librarians, public historians, and educators to discuss the theme "Memory, Slavery and Citizenship".

 

The week of activities will include:

A.  Plenary Sessions, Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM
Papers by invited senior scholars.

B.  Workshops & Seminars, Monday to Friday, 11:15 AM – 1:00 PM

  1. Worskshops for Teachers will focus on the classroom experience
  2. Graduate and Post-Graduates will present research papers for discussion.

C.  Research Skills Workshop, Monday to Thursday, 2:30 PM – 4:00 PM

  • •     Augmented Reality Workshop
  • •    Digital Techniques
  • •    Oral History Methodology

D.  Virtual Seminars, Monday to Thursday, 2:30 PM – 4:00 PM, French only

Plenary sessions will be recorded for video podcast to Haiti.  Follow-up discussions by video conference will be facilitated by moderator, Jhon Picard Byron, invited guests and students from Haiti.

E.  Research Video Festival Series, Monday to Thursday, 4:15 PM – 5:30 PM

  • •    Monday, August  22 – Opening Reception in honour of The International Year for People of African Descent and in recognition of the UNESCO Slave Route Project
  • •    Tuesday, August 23 – Dedication of UNESCO Slave Route Project Itineraries of African Canadian Memory with guest speaker The Right Hon. Michaëlle Jean
  • •    Wednesday, August 24 – Caribbean night to include dinner, music and dancing
  • •    Thursday, August 25 – Movie night

H.  Field Trip – Saturday August 27th, 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM
Tour to Black history sites in Toronto, including St. Lawrence Hall, The Toronto Necropolis, George Brown house, The Ward, First Baptist Church and Osgoode Hall, guided by historians Adrienne Shadd and Hilary Dawson.
